Celebrating World Blood Donor Day in Style

Although World Blood Donor Day is officially celebrated on 14 June each year, we kicked off the festivities a day early on 13 June with an exciting province-wide blood donation drive that showcased the generosity and community spirit of our donors across the Western Cape.

World Blood Donor Day is an opportunity to honour the everyday heroes who roll up their sleeves to save lives. It also serves as an important reminder to maintain healthy blood stocks, especially during the winter months when donation numbers often decline while the demand for blood remains unchanged.

This year, ten shopping malls across the province joined us to make the day a resounding success. Participating malls included Blue Route Mall, Kenilworth Centre, N1 City Mall, CapeGate Shopping Centre, Somerset Mall, Promenade Mall, Tyger Valley Shopping Centre, Table Bay Mall, Whale Coast Mall and Langeberg Mall. Together, these venues created a vibrant atmosphere that encouraged both regular and first-time donors to make a life-saving difference.

The public’s response was truly inspiring. A remarkable 1,009 people walked through our donor centre doors that day, resulting in 873 units of blood collected. We were also thrilled to welcome 212 new donors to the WCBS family, a fantastic achievement that will help strengthen our donor base for the future.

One of the highlights of the day was the lively activation at Blue Route Mall, where an Outside Broadcast from KFM 94.5 added to the festive atmosphere and raised awareness of the importance of blood donation. Donors and patrons also joined in celebrating the birthday of well-known media personality, and our very own ambassador, Carl Wastie. Making the occasion even more memorable.

Special congratulations go to Whale Coast Mall, in Hermanus, which emerged as the top-performing mall that day. Our team collected a whopping 121 units of blood, making a significant contribution to the campaign’s overall success. Well done to everyone involved in this outstanding achievement!

The success of this year’s World Blood Donor Day celebrations is a testament to the dedication of our donors, staff, volunteers, mall partners and supporters. Every donation collected represents hope for patients in need and helps ensure that lifesaving blood is available when it matters most.
