Press release: Step up to be a Hero – Donate Blood. Save Lives!
Cape Town, Western Cape – 2 May 2025 – Winter presents unique challenges for blood collection: seasonal illnesses such as colds and flu, fewer donation clinics due to school holidays, and fewer people venturing out in the colder weather. These factors often lead to low blood stock levels, when the need is just as critical. In light of this, the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) proudly launches its annual winter campaign under the inspiring theme: “Heroes.”
As the cold weather sets in and the school holidays approach, we call on the public to rise to the occasion and be heroes by donating blood, because heroes don’t all wear capes; some simply roll up their sleeves.
This year’s winter campaign kicks off with the message – “Step Up to Be a Hero”. “WCBS hope to ignite a sense of community and compassion by encouraging individuals to step forward and help meet the ongoing demand for blood, especially during the challenging winter months”, says Marike Carlie, Public Relations Manager at WCBS.

To thank our dedicated donors, we’ll be giving away a limited-edition pair of “hero socks” each month from May to August; a warm token of appreciation for keeping others warm and alive with each life-saving donation.
If you’re between 16 and 75 years old, weigh 50kg or more, and are in good general health with a safe sexual lifestyle, you can be a hero and donate blood. The process is safe, takes only 30 minutes, and the body replenishes the 475ml of donated blood within 24 hours. Donors are encouraged to eat a good meal 3–4 hours before donating and stay well hydrated before and after the donation.
