One Week. Ten Schools. 1,000 Donors Through the Doors.
Cape Town, [24 July 2025] – Ten of the Western Cape’s top blood-donating schools are teaming up this winter to make a powerful impact — not in the classroom, but at their blood donation clinics. From Monday, 28 July to Friday, 01 August 2025, these schools will join in the Week of Warriors initiative, a youth-led blood donation campaign with a clear goal: attract 1,000 blood donors in just one week.
The campaign, by the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS), comes at a time when blood stocks traditionally dip to critical levels. With flu season, exam stress, and colder weather reducing regular donor turnout, young donors are stepping up to fill the gap.
“We believe in the power of youth to lead, and these ten schools are proof of what’s possible when young people unite for a purpose bigger than themselves,” said Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. “They’re not just showing up — they’re setting the standard for schools across the province.”
Participating schools, in no particular order, include:
• Fairmont High
• Protea Heights Academy
• Westerford High
• The Settlers High School
• Spine Road High
• Edgemead High
• Livingstone High
• Apex High
• DF Malan
• Worcester Gymnasium
Each school will host its on-site blood donation clinic during the campaign week. While members of the public won’t donate at these clinics, WCBS is encouraging communities to rally around the initiative, celebrate the schools’ leadership, and continue supporting donation efforts at blood donation clinics and centres throughout the Western Cape.
The campaign slogan, “Let’s Unite to Save Lives,” highlights both the urgency and the unity behind the drive. “This is about more than numbers,” said Carli. “Every learner who donates is giving someone else a chance at life. They’re not just warriors for the week — they’re changemakers for the future.”
