When we launched the Extra Drop Initiative in March 2025, we hoped to give our blood donors an opportunity to make their life-saving donation go even further. And thanks to the incredible response from our blood donor community, the impact has been truly inspiring. We would like to thank each blood donor that made every drop count through this initiative.

“You not only showed up to donate blood but you extended your giving in an absolute meaningful way by opting in for us to donate R15 towards our supported cause”, says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager.

Through this initiative, 4,760 donors chose to donate the value of their thank-you token of appreciation, raising an incredible R71,400 for our first beneficiary: League of the Friends of the Blind (LOFOB). These funds are now helping to provide life-changing rehabilitation and support services to blind and visually impaired individuals across the Western Cape.

A New Vision with LOFOB

We were proud to hand over the cheque to League of the Friends of the Blind (LOFOB) on Monday, 19 May 2025. Receiving it on behalf of the organisation were Mr Philip Bam, Treasurer, and Mrs Kelly Alexander, Fundraising and Marketing Assistant.

“The donation received from the Western Cape Blood Service is a testament to the trust and confidence the donors have in our mission to make a meaningful impact in the lives of blind people. We are deeply grateful for the generosity of the donors, whose contributions will significantly enhance our services and enable us to continue empowering those we serve with dignity and independence. Thank you once again for believing in our mission and for your commitment to making a difference”, says Shahiemah Edwards, Chief Exectutive Officer for the  LOFOB.

Our Next Beneficiary: Hannah’s Place of Safety

We’re thrilled to announce that the next recipient of the Extra Drop is Hannah’s Place of Safety, a non-profit organisation in Mitchell’s Plain that provides a loving, temporary home for abandoned, abused, and neglected babies aged birth to one year old.

Founded by Janine and Dion Fabe — inspired by their own daughter Hannah, who was adopted after being found abandoned at birth — the organisation is a haven where every baby receives the care, healing, and affection they need while awaiting a permanent home.

By choosing to donate your token of appreciation again, you can help give these babies a safer, gentler start to life.

How the Extra Drop works:

  • Donate Blood: Visit any of our WCBS centres to donate blood.
  • Choose Your Token of Appreciation: Before your donation, you can either keep your token of appreciation or WCBS can donate a monetary value to charity on your behalf.
  • Making a Difference: If you decide to donate your token of appreciation, WCBS will match your kindness with a R15 contribution to the chosen charity.
  • Charity Focus: Every two months, we will support a different charity, carefully selected by the WCBS committee. These charities will focus on improving healthcare, education, poverty alleviation, youth development, early childhood development, people with disabilities, humanitarian work and animal welfare across the Western Cape.

With every Extra Drop, you’re not just giving blood — you’re giving hope. Thank you for being part of something truly life-changing.

Thank you for continuing your life-saving journey with us.
