On 12 May, we celebrate International Nurses Day, in honour of the birth of Florence Nightingale. This day was declared Nurses day in 1974 by the International Council of Nurses to honour and give recognition to all those in the profession.
This year the theme is “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies”. The theme encourages healthcare systems, policymakers and the public to recognise the value of nurses and invest in their wellbeing.
Our nurses are responsible for assessing the blood donors’ health and eligibility before a blood donation can take place as well as the care of the donor immediately after donation. In this way we ensure a high level of safety for both the donor and the blood recipient.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the nurses for their dedication, kindness and care shown to all our blood donors and patients in the Western Cape. You are truly remarkable.
