On 12 May, we celebrate International Nurses Day, which is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is regarded as the founder of modern nursing. The day was declared in 1974 by the International Council of Nurses to honour and give recognition to all those in the profession.

This year the theme is “Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses strengthens economies”. The theme encourages healthcare systems, policymakers and the public to recognise the value of nurses and invest in their wellbeing.

WCBS nurses are responsible for assessing the blood donors’ health and eligibility before a blood donation can take place, and caring for the donor immediately after donation to safeguard the donor.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the nurses for their dedication, kindness and care shown to all blood donors in the Western Cape. You are truly remarkable.
